Lawmakers Bully and Deny Trans Youth Rights, Yet Again!
In recent years, there has been a steady rise in greater acceptance and support for transgender youth. However, lawmakers in some states are working to limit the rights of our community members, sadly, nothing new, right? Here is another recent example. It is the override of a veto to pass a ban on transition or gender-affirming care for trans youth and limiting the discussion of gender identity in schools.
Healthcare Should Be Accessible to Everyone
The ban on transition care for trans youth is a particularly concerning development. Transition care can include hormone therapy, surgery, and other medical interventions that help individuals transition to the gender they identify with. These treatments can be life-saving for trans youth who experience significant distress as a result of gender dysphoria, leading to the rise of depression, anxiety, and others. The fact that lawmakers are seeking to ban this type of care is deeply troubling. It is a clear attempt to deny our community access to the right to medical treatment we need. It is an attempt to stigmatize and discriminate against our LGBTQIA+ family.
Schools: Today’s Political Battle Ground
Limiting the discussion of gender identity in schools is another attempt to silence our LGBTQIA+ voices. It stifles progress toward a greater understanding of acceptance and inclusivity of gender diversity. It is essential for students to learn about and respect different gender identities to create a safe and encouraging learning environment. The law forbids the requirement or recommendation to address or refer to students by their pronouns that do not follow the student’s biological sex indicated on the birth certificate.
These laws can have severe consequences for transgender youth both domestically and internationally. Our trans youth face high rates of discrimination, bullying, and violence. Denying them the care they need and silencing their experiences can exacerbate these problems. As mentioned and consequently, it can lead to depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues, as well as a lack of access to necessary medical care.

It is crucial that we push back against these harmful and discriminatory laws. We must stand up for the dignity and worth of every human being, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation for an inclusive future full of acceptance, respect, and most importantly, love.
